Kampot River |
Boy, forgive me.. if you feel depressed just by reading the title. After the not-so-happy experience travelling in Koh Rong, we were headed to Kampot. This riverside town is the capital of Kampot province and is located in Southern Cambodia. What's still stuck to mind up to this day is the fact we couldn't find a decent accommodation to get there from Sihanoukville. Getting to Sihanoukville from Sieap Reap prior to Koh Rong was nice as there was an option to fly ,which we took in a heartbeat. Unluckily, Sihanokville-Kampot was a different story for Kampot had no airports.

Breakfast time! |
So there were hubby and I, crammed in a van with 8 other travelers heading to Kampot. All of them, pardon me, were some unpleasant-smelling teenagers from North America & Europe -talking about body odor here. *Sigh*.. it was one of the longest and bumpiest 2.5 hr rides in my life.

Rikitikitavi |
Kampot, however, didn't disappoint! First off, we stayed at one of the nicest accommodations in town called Rikitikitavi. The place was more like a small bed and breakfast with only 6 rooms. Their restaurant food was the bomb! It's off the chain! I didn't expect the food quality, especially from such a small place in a sleepy town of Kampot. Among the dishes we had were the Cambodian beef loc lac, chicken burrito, fish and chips, and the Indian-style butter chicken. Breakfast was also very very good. What I loved the most was the tropical fruits they generously provided at breakfast.

Kampot pepper! |
The world famous Kampot pepper was one of the main reasons of our 3-day transit. We toured one of the companies who processed the peppers and bought quite a bit for use as well as souvenirs. We helped ourself to getting tuk-tuk rides in town, and of course some guy tried to rip us off. I just thought it was funny that I decided to just walk home from downtown back to Rikitikitavi, which wasn't too bad.

Tiny Kampot Pillows |
Noone ever guessed that I found a lovely souvenir place called Tiny Kampot Pillow. They made most of the commodity, be it Khmer clothing, bags, pillows, hats, to dining table mats. Pretty neat little place with really good bargains. We came back again after our first stop there and helped the local economy a bit by buying hand-made stuff we liked. If you are ever in the area, give the place a visit. It is located on the 2000 Roundabout, Kampot.

So, now what's with the title of the post? A couple of months before our visit, a French national was found in Kampot river, naked and bludgeoned on the head. That got me scared! So I guess the message of this part of my travels is to travel safe and be on the look out for potential dangers. While in Kampot, we avoided wandering around after dark. We did a river walk and everything else, but always tried to stay close to big crowds in well-lit areas past 7 PM.
Glad to say that we were safe!
